about

This album is from a collection of recordings I made in 2014 and 2015, when I started focusing more on experimental music and going to gigs like Make It Up Club. While I had been listening to and dabbling in making experimental music before then, this is really the time I started having the mindset that 'I want to make this'. This album is the initial results of my attempt.

There are no instruments, just processed field recordings or contact mics. For the most part, this was through hardware effects. Two pieces were created using delay feedback in Ableton Live.

All pieces are improvised and recorded in one take. They have only been edited for brevity in places and given the harsh noises and frequencies, there are still a few blemishes in there.

Despite sounding like the genre, these pieces are also experimental in the sense that they often started off with asking myself "I wonder what happens if I...?".

When I first started listening to experimental noise, a lot of it sounded the same to me. However, over time I developed a more discerning ear, found what types I preferred and began to hear more of the artist's backgrounds and personalities in it. e.g. hearing the Latin American background in one of Omar Rodriguez Lopez's noise albums or seeing Louis Burdett perform a noise set like a jazz drummer would. I also found that, as contradictory as it sounds, I liked harsh noises but not always played in a harsh way. I preferred noise that was more 'introverted'.

I like to think the thing that unifies my Pygarg albums, as they explore more genres and sounds, is the personality behind them. (As a solo project, that should at least be the base constant). I hope you can hear some that through these abstract noises regardless of your level of experience in listening to such music.
