about

One of my favorite albums of all time is Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92. When I first heard it, I wasn't really into electronic music, and yet there was something there that drew me in. It was organic yet other worldly and seemed to fit a wide variety of moods. There was even a period of a few years where I would listen to either it or Selected Ambient Works Volume Two to go to sleep most nights of the week.

Ambientish consists of tracks I composed in 2014 after moving to Brunswick. It started off as my attempt to create something inspired by the Selected Ambient Works albums. However, not having electronic music roots means you would only be able to hear a direct influence on a few of the tracks.

Tracks 1, 4 and 6 have this more mainstream electronic sound and consist of synths, drums machines and samples, things I haven't had a lot of experience in. The remaining tracks are field recordings processed through hardware or laptop effects and are a bit more abstract. Brian Eno said ambient music should be as ignorable as it is interesting. Although not my final goal, I don't think any of these tracks quite hit the mark therefore it's 'ambientish'.

It took a lot of procrastination to finally get this album out. As I mentioned earlier, most of the pieces were composed in 2014 but as none of the major elements from my last album (piano, guitar, vocals) were present on this album, I had to adopt a new workflow that wasn't always inspiring. Although these tracks were stopping me completing the other new material I was working on, I found them too fully formed to abandon.

Now that I finally have Ambientish out of the way, hopefully I can publish more soon. In the works I have a collection of experimental noise pieces and some more mainstream guitar based songs.
